This morning a local carpenter dropped off our dining room table.
We went about getting it the most backward way possible. First, we found legs we liked on Etsy. Then we found someone who was willing to make a table using those legs. He usually makes farmhouse-style tables and uses pine for the top. We didn’t want something that soft, so I went to a local lumberyard that specializes in exotic woods. I showed them a drawer from the hunt board and asked what kind of wood we should use for the table top factoring in color and durability. They recommended an African hardwood called Sapele. I had never heard of it and neither had our carpenter.
It is the perfect choice. The color looks like mahogany and blends well with the hunt board and fireplace mantle. Sapele is also hard and heavy. It took three of us to get it from his truck into the dining room. I was genuinely afraid it was going to hit the ground at various points.
The chairs in the photo are temporary, so we still have to find some we like for it, but we are really pleased with how it turned out.
