An addition to Hobbit’s hole

by Steve Bullock on August 6, 2022

  • 8:30 AM — I started touring a house in the Historic District of Concord, NC.
  • 10:28 AM — Returned rental car.
  • 11:23 AM — Got to my gate at the airport for the return trip to Troy, New York.
  • 11:24 AM — Made an offer on the house I had visited earlier.
  • 7:52 PM — I placed an order for a limited-edition framed shadow box for Hobbes’ new room even though I had no guarantees where that was going to be.

  • 12:52 PM — UPS delivered the shadow box.
  • 2:20 PM — I realized his room is too dark for the artwork to be seen correctly.
  • 9:23 PM — Ordered a picture light to install over the shadow box.

  • 7:15 PM — Installed the picture light.

It took six months for the shadow box to be produced, shipped, and arrive! Was it worth it?

Yes!

There are 4 layers of art. The background is a 6-color screen print. The next layer (toward the viewer) is another 6-color screen print of trees and Yoda but this time the empty spaces are cut out so the background shows through. There is a thin spacer placed between the background and the laser-cut piece to give it depth. That process is repeated for the next layer featuring Luke Skywalker and his X-wing. Finally, a black laser-cut piece is laid on top.

It is difficult to describe how cool it is without seeing it firsthand, so you may want to watch the making of video for a couple of minutes.
