Normally, I start these posts with a photo, but I will provide some context to the first photo this time: The painters arrived at 7 a.m. and got started quickly as usual. Chelsea didn’t feel like eating, so I fed Hobbes, Roux, and myself. After breakfast, I took Roux for a walk. We exited through the back door and were going to take the driveway to the street. It was along the way that my heart skipped a beat. The very dark green we chose as an accent color was anything but dark and very similar to the color of a Mallard’s head. The photo I am posting does not convey the brightness and shading of the color at all. Trust me. It was bad.
My mind raced trying to figure out whether or not to say something, whether or not to stop the work, whether or not to run out and buy a different shade of green.
I spoke to the lead painter and told him I wasn’t sure if it was the lack of two or more coats but I was concerned. He looked at it with me and agreed it didn’t look right. he checked the paint color on the label and did some side by side testing. It still looked slightly off. We agreed to apply a second coat to see if that improved things.
Fortunately, it did.
The color is still slightly more blue than the sample I purchased two months ago. I was told by the painters that different mixing machines, different paint bases, and the alignment of the stars can generate variations in shade. (I made that last one up.) It turned out fine under today’s overcast sky. I’ll be curious if it is still okay in bright sunshine. We’ll likely find out tomorrow.
