In preparation for the new exterior paint job, I have been making minor changes to the front porch and entryway. One of those was to replace the broken metal numbers on the door casing. I considered lots of options but ultimately settled on transom stickers which mimic the gold-leaf versions found on old houses and businesses.
They were a huge pain to install correctly. I ordered ones that stick to the interior glass. Unfortunately, I couldn’t see the gold from that side, so I was left to guess about the correct placement and rotation. The number three went up fairly easily (since it was the first), but trying to align the nine was almost impossible. I had to peel it off the glass with a razorblade five times in order to get it to look right.
After all that work and frustration, I realized that the numbers don’t jump out at people on the street. I’m not sure delivery people will notice them. There is a chance I’ll need to add additional house numbers somewhere more obvious.
