Representative pricing for groceries is difficult. Just like in the United States, various brands or speciality items will carry wide-ranging differences. We shop at about three different grocery stores to find everything we want: a Walmart, a Sprouts-like chain store called La Comer, and Costco. Where possible, I selected brands that are available in the majority of North American grocery stores. If you have questions about a particular item, feel free to leave a message in the comments. Here we go:
Eggs :: Mexicans eat a lot of eggs as they are the base for most breakfast meals. While you can buy them by the dozen, I’m not sure if many people do. We buy them in a package of 30. I’ll give you numbers in a moment, but I feel like the pricing/quality is a little skewed. In the States, we used to buy generic, inexpensive eggs. They tend to have yolks that are very pale yellow, whites that are very thin, almost like water, and have very little flavor. At some point, we started buying the more expensive free-range ones. Generally, the yolks are a deep orange color, the whites much thicker, and they have a lot more flavor. We haven’t noticed multiple egg options here. I can’t tell you if they are free-range, organic, etc. I can tell you that they look and taste like the expensive free-range ones. Cost per dozen :: 25 pesos ($1.25)
Yogurt :: Oîkos Greek :: 32 oz :: 62 pesos ($3.11)
Bananas :: 1 lb :: 10 pesos (50¢)
Bread :: Oroweat 12 Grain :: 56 pesos ($2.81)
Coke :: 3 Liter :: 36 pesos ($1.81)
Soy Milk :: Silk 1 Liter :: 42 pesos ($2.11)
Ice Cream :: Nestle or Holanda 1.3 Liters :: 45 pesos ($2.26) Let me say, this stuff tastes terrible. It is bland and isn’t worth eating even if it was given away. There are very few grocery store options. You either get one of these two brands or Häagen-Dazs and/or Ben & Jerry’s. I’ll list their prices for comparison.
Ice Cream :: Häagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry’s 1 Liter :: 220 pesos ($11.00) Don’t buy ice cream from the grocery store!
Cereal :: Lucky Charms 10.47 oz – the little box :: 85 pesos ($4.27)
Cereal :: Special K Original 20.45 oz – the big box :: 45 pesos ($2.26)
Meat :: 80/20 Ground Beef 1 lb :: 45 pesos ($2.26)
Meat :: 90/10 Ground Sirlon 1 lb :: 94 pesos ($4.72)
Meat :: Chicken Breast 1 lb :: 51 pesos ($2.56)
Meat :: Bacon 1 lb :: 115 pesos ($5.77)
Milk :: Whole 1 Gallon :: 56 pesos ($2.81)
Pineapple :: Whole :: 17 pesos (85¢)
