A post about popó.

by Steve Bullock on June 20, 2021

Popó is pronounced exactly like the U.S. slang term for the police. It means poop. Unless you are in a hotel or resort that specifically permits it, you aren’t supposed to flush toilet paper in many Latin American countries. The sewer infrastructure can’t handle it. So what do you do with used papel higienico? Put it into the small wastebasket you find in every bathroom. We have experienced this rule on multiple occasions, but doing it for a week or two seems far different than committing to follow it for at least a year. After all, we have a lot of years of muscle memory to overcome and it has to smell like a convenience store bathroom, right? Maybe it is the cross-air ventilation in most Mexican bathrooms, but it hasn’t been as eww-inducing as we have expected. Different than what we are used to? Yes. Doable? Also, yes.
